Welcome back! I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable break. Don't forget that this Friday, 1/6, is a noon dismissal. No lunch will be served. Even though it's a short week, we have a lot to do. Your child has an activity packet to complete, spelling and vocabulary, as well as other class assignments. I do ask them to record assignments in their planners every day. If nothing is written, ask your child to show you their activity sheet. They should be bringing it home daily. Here is a link to this week's activities.

Week of 11/14
Welcome to the 2nd marking period! It was nice to see everybody at student led conferences last week. We've got a lot of new goals for this marking period and some exciting units of study coming up.
Right now we're gearing up for research. We started visual displays this week. Students attended an art workshop to learn how to incorporate important information in a visually appealing way. Our headings are coming along! We'll be posting pictures of some of them on the Bblog later this week, so check it out!
Headings and first visuals are due this week. A visual should represent a key idea about your child's topic and should directly relate to the facts that they collect. Your child will be expected to use their visuals DURING their research presentations as they present facts about their topic. (We'd like to avoid reading 100s of notecards and then turning to the board to discuss the pictures/graphs etc. Those need to be presented in context.) Other research project deadlines are as follows:
Tuesday 11/22 - Outline due. We'll have a lesson in class on that Monday, but outlines will need to be completed for homework.
Wednesday 11/30 - quiz due
Thursday 12/1 - All visuals must be completed and displayed on boards.
Monday 12/5 - Friday 12/16 - Presentations
Friday 12/9 - research paper due
Friday 12/16 - revised research paper due
ALL RESEARCH MATERIALS MUST BE TURNED IN BY 12/22 - includes notes, draft, final report and research self evaluation.
Students often ask, "How many notecards do I need to have?" My reply, "As many as it takes for you to have a complete understanding of your topic." I am more concerned with the quality of the information that students gather rather than the quantity. They need to UNDERSTAND the information they find and be able to present it to others in a way that makes sense and is complete. They should have enough information to be able to present for a minimum of 10-15 minutes BEFORE taking questions or comments.
In other news, we're finishing up our unit on weather this week. We'll be starting a unit on watersheds that relates to our trout project. Trout eggs will arrive on Friday so keep an eye on the tank!
You can find a list of our other activities this week here
Sincerely,
Mrs.Theriault
