Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Updates

March 11, 2020

Dear IDCS Families,

On March 9, there was a conference call, to discuss COVID 19, with the CT Commissioner of Education, Connecticut School Superintendents, Connecticut Department of Emergency Management, Connecticut Department of Health, and Governor Lamont’s Office. Connecticut state leaders are strongly recommending that schools and communities postpone or cancel events where more than 100 people are gathering in a single space/room. This is an action that we do not take lightly; however, being cautious today and the next few weeks regarding large social gatherings, will decrease the risk of exposure and transmission of COVID 19 over the next several weeks.

Consequently, IDCS is postponing Annie Junior, which was scheduled for March 26 and March 27. As well, we are postponing our Basket Raffle event, which was scheduled for April 3. We anticipate rescheduling both events. Also, the IDCS’ All Schools, that are held on Friday mornings at 8:30 at IDCS, are canceled until future notice. At this time, we will continue After school Programs, Sports, and Extended Day. We are holding Student Led Conferences as scheduled. If we need to make any changes, we will contact parents/caregivers immediately.

This morning, Mrs. Morrone and I spoke to the students in all of the classrooms to share the information in this letter. We did not share with the PreK and K/1 children. The PreK and K/1 teachers have been reinforcing that the students wash their hands and that the students should not be touching other students (i.e., hugging, handshakes, etc).

Our custodians are doing extra and more frequent cleaning throughout the building. Moreover, we have created a comprehensive cleaning plan for this situation. Our goal is to keep IDCS open.  However, we want to be prepared if this situation were to occur. Accordingly, we are asking parents to complete a survey about internet access and availability of electronic devices at home. Parents will receive this survey electronically, and parents will be able to complete the survey during the Student Led Conferences.

Just as a reminder, CDC recommends the following preventative actions to mitigate the spreading of respiratory disease, including the following:

  • Frequent and thorough hand-washing for at least 20 seconds
  • Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid sharing water bottles
  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick
  • Staying home when you are sick
  • Covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and then throwing the tissue in the trash
  • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces.

IDCS is responding proactively to situations related to COVID 19. And, our goal is to keep IDCS open. If we had to close the school, there may be a possibility for our teachers/students to engage in online learning.  Please click on this link to complete the survey.

We will continue to update everyone as events occur. Please know that the health and well being of our students are our top priority.  Please contact Dr. Retelle or Mrs. Morrone if you have any questions.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Ellen Retelle
